One of my most treasured gifts from my sister Katie, was a necklace that she gave me for my birthday years ago. It has a picture of two sisters holding hands on one side, and the other side reads, "Sisters are Forever". I did not know it at the time, but this was going to be one of life's most valuable lessons for me. I can still see myself standing at the counter in the store with Katie, looking at the different necklaces. I had a dog named, "Hanna" who was a golden retriever that I loved dearly. They had a necklace where the bell part of it was a dog, and the ringer was the tail. Of course that's the one I loved, but Katie mentioned a few times how cute the sisters bell was. I could not decide, so I told her to choose which one she would like me to have. I have a photo of her coming out of the store that day.
The reason I am telling you this is because that is the first thing I went looking for after I received the call that Katie had died. It is not the amount of the present that is important, because really the biggest gift of all, is what we give of ourselves. In my opinion it is equally as important on how we receive gifts, so as not to hurt anyone's feelings. Remember, we do not have to give, but when someone does, that is a gift!! They took the time out to do something special for you.
I wore the bell necklace the day of Katie's wake, and the following day at church. The ringing of that bell reminds me that Katie is always with me. She knew the art of gift giving. You see, because in giving we receive.
As I sit here with tears streaming down my face, I can hear the sounds of rain and thunder outside. That is my sign that Katie is right here with me...tears from heaven.
Sisters are Forever!
